Crecí amando Lawrence Arms y Alkaline Trio.

ENGLISH VERSION OF THE INTERVIEW

Hello, how is everything going on across Europe? Where are you now, and tell us about your latest show here in Europe.
Erik: Currently we are in Scotland and all is well!  We played Glasgow last night at the 13th Note and ate vegan Haggis. All is right in the world.

You’re doing a really long tour, are you usually playing that much around the U.S.?
E:  Dowsing has been on tour pretty much since mid October. We did a 30 day tour this Summer as well, but this is definitely the longest tour for both bands.

Tell us about the history of Dowsing as a band: How many years since the foundation of the band? How did you know each other? There were some changes in the line-up last year, right?
E: Dowsing started roughly 4 years ago strictly for fun (as it continues to be). I had songs and wanted to get them out there and had some friends help.  Things change though and we’ve added/lost members.  The current line-up is probably the strongest… Dare I say best sounding version of the band.  Mike Politowicz, of defunct Michigan Emo outfit Brave Bird, and Will Lange, prince of chill, now fill the rotation.  We have known Mike for a bit from touring with Brave Bird and we met Will on the Internet (find him on Instagram @therealkenanthompson).

Also, if you would need to present your band to a “Dowsing stranger”, how you present your own music with words?
E: Feel Good Sad Jams.

Correct me if i’m wrong, but you’re coming from Chicago’s punk-core scene, but your music shows huge amount of pop/indie sounds and melodies.Of course this happened before with bands like The Get Up Kids, but which bands are the ones you get more influenced in both emo and hardcore scenes? which ones are your favorites in general?

E: Well, I wouldn’t say that we grew out of that scene. I moved to Chicago when I was 22 from New Jersey and it is just different to me. I did grow up loving the Lawrence Arms and Alkaline Trio though. As far as influence I would say bands like the Weakerthans, the Jealous Sound, Superchunk, Guided By Voices, Hot Water Music have had positive effects on how I write.

It looks that there are several bands (like Hotelier, Joyce Manor, Free Throw or Dowsing) playing some kind of an emo-90’s revival (please, take revival word in a good way! ). Do you think that there are some thing going on? There’s a proper “scene” sharing shows and knowing each other or it’s just a coincidence?
E:  I think that it’s become easy to lump a lot of bands into Emo these days. There is definitely more to it than that and «deeper» influence in some of the bands, but I think the scene has benefited from it. More bands with like minds playing with each other and having a good time sounds alright with me.

I think for this reason (this revival thing) the music style Dowsing is playing more or less, is having more attention from public that were not paying a lot of effort to any emo-90’s stuff before. Like, for example, the reunions from Mineral or American Football now it seems like they have tons of fans and in their own active years they were basically not having so much attention… Do you agree with this or what’s your point of view at least of what you see here in Europe?
E:  We don’t really worry about Emo Revivial. I think that we just function better as a band now and that we tour a lot and continue to put out loads of music. I think that’s the only way to survive in music these days.  Staying consistent.  We only put out a split this year so it’s been rather quiet for us. So I guess I just went against my own statement, but we have played out a lot this year. Sorry, new record next year.  This is Dowsing’s second time overseas and its even better than the first time. If Emo Revival has helped us then thank you, but I want to believe it is from our own determination. It’s great that bands like Mineral and American Football have received the attention they deserve and it’s great that it has helped get more kids into newer bands. For what it’s worth thanks emo revival.

How important do you think it is for a band to have real support from the press nowadays? Not only about how important is to have your album reviewed on Pitchfork, KEXP…, also about any small local publication.
E: It’s important to have them all on your side, but also just having the Internet on your side could help you too.

I’ve never been to Chicago, but it always look like there’s a real sense of music community in that area. Is that the case right now or it’s just something that happened in the 90s?
E: For me Chicago’s scene has changed drastically in the past 2 years. I think those glory days are gone I’m afraid.

«Si el revival emo es algo que nos ha ayudado entonces gracias, pero quiero pensar que es el resultado de nuestro propio esfuerzo» - DowsingNow a lot of the things going on are related to festivals. Which ones are your favorites to play and as public?
E: The Fest in Gainesville is all that matters. My other favorite fest, Stay Sweet Fest, is dead #rip

To finish with the interview I want to ask you about Kittyhawk, your side project and also the supporters in this tour. Tell us something about the band and how is going on now with your debut LP?
E: Kittyhawk has gotten a nice reception. I appreciate the kind words and enjoy making music with those 3 (Mark, Kate, and Evan).  It’s become more than a side project at this point and  I can see us doing loads more in 2015, but we will need to get home from Europe first.
