¿Y a España?

ORIGINAL ENGLISH TEXT

+ First of all, we must recognize that The Pax Cecilia has made a name thanks in part to the record you have given away. In which moment did you decide to put on practice this atypical distribution?
We also released our last album «Nouveau» for free in a similar manner. It’s basically just a matter of getting our album into the hands of the most number of people we can. Removing the cost barrier enabled us to generate much more interest in the album, and also produced a sense of loyalty and appreciation in people who received it. We’ve been getting a small but steady stream of donations since releasing the album, of which we are very grateful. We knew we weren’t in a position to sell an album and make a lot of money from it, so we thought, hey, let’s take a small financial loss, and just send this out to anyone who’s interested. This worked for our last album, and even more so for «Blessed…».

+ Nowadays with the Internet is really easy to move the music. Despite of this, you took the decision of sending the record physically, even outside U.S. Don’t you think you choose the complicated way?
It was complicated, frustrating, expensive, and time consuming. We labeled and shipped all of them ourselves… nearly 10,000 of them. Almost half of those were shipped overseas. The internet is great for the movement of ideas and awareness, but we feel it is also important to have a physical copy. Something to touch and interact with. This is also why we decided to produce and package the album in a unique and creative way. We wanted people to interact with the full experience. Now that we are nearing the end of the run, we are keeping the remaining copies to give out at shows. We have made the album available for download from our website and it includes scans of the artwork and booklet.

+ Your record as we have said, have reached different places during this delivery process. Have you received any offer from a label to re-release it? Or at least a distribution offer in particular countries?
We haven’t yet gotten a distribution offer in any country. We’d definitely want to pursue this for our next release, but nothing confirmed yet. We have talked to a few friendly record labels though, and would be very interested in a vinyl release of «Blessed are the Bonds» with some new artwork.

+ Pax can refer to the period of hegemony of a nation during which a period of internal peace is kept inside the empire. It can also have mythological references. What does that name obeys to?
I’d say the name definitely can refer to both of those things. We took both into account when discussing it amongst ourselves. «Blessed are the Bonds» was just a single mythological (or metaphorical) story, outlining a range of very common ideas. I think many modern societies can related to the notion of the gentle period before «empires» or «ideologies» fall. We North Americans and Europeans should be able to understand this. The stupidity and petty power struggles among our «leaders» have only advanced fundamentalism and anti-westernism around the world. We must realize that there are insane men (psychopaths) from every creed. It is not muslims who are crazy. Or christians who are crazy. Or bankers, hipsters, artists, etc. It is individuals who are crazy. It is individuals who are sane. It is individuals who are aware (or not), rational (or not). The name «Cecilia» is mostly referring to Saint Cecilia who was the patron saint of music. She struggled greatly and was tortured for her beliefs, but never recanted them. It should also be mentioned that our friend had a cat named Cecilia who ended up eating her own kittens. I’m not sure there’s a relation though.

+ More than for the fact that a CD is given away for free, it amazes the quality of the recording, as well as the artwork and packaging. Hasn’t it resulted like a marketing action highly expensive?
It has been expensive for us. Especially the shipping costs which were much more than we anticipated. We all agreed that the expenses were worth it in order to get the album and the story out there. As I said earlier, we could have charged $15 for the album, but by removing that barrier, we generated a great deal more interested, and ultimately it was a good thing for us.

+ Which demand have the record had? I think you ran out of copies, do you know how much cds have you sent?
We’ve sent out nearly 10,000 copies, which is the entire printing. We’ve also had probably 5000+ downloads from our website since releasing it there.

+ How many of them have gone to Europe, approximately? And to Spain?
I don’t have exact numbers, but I would estimate that around 3000 have gone to Europe. I think we’ve sent a couple hundred copies to Spain.

+ Have you planned to come to Europe to play in the near future?
We’d come there as soon as it’s financially and logistically possible. and hopefully with new material. In order to do this we would need to hook up with a label or booking agency that has experience sending American bands overseas. Hopefully this is something in our future.

+ In a tour for example in Europe, with what kind of band would you like to play? Metal, hardcore, post-rock, ambient, prog-rock…?
We’d play with any of the above. It be nice to play with bands than run the full range of musical styles. In other words, we have interest in bands from all of those stylings. Playing shows throughout America we see ourselves mostly playing with metal, hard-core and post-rock bands. We enjoy shows that are more of a mixture of different musical stylings. Everything from folk to prog-metal. The greater diversity, the better. We don’t want to surround ourselves with people who only like or listen to one genre of music. They end up defining themselves by that genre instead of taking influence from a whole range of differing areas. The same can be said for religion, politics, etc. We shouldn’t define ourselves by one thing, but rather our own unique mixture of things. We should praise diversity.

+ Before this «Blessed are the Bonds» you had another record, «Nouveau» (2004). How has the band evolved from one to another? And since de «Blessed» recording to this moment?
We’ve all evolved in different ways. We still sound like the Pax Cecilia, but our tastes, abilities, and confidence has grown greatly with ‘Blessed are the Bonds’. Judging by the new material we are writing, the next evolution of the Pax Cecilia will be another big change for our sound and our style. Again, I think it will always be recognizable as the Pax Cecilia, but will not necessarily be a direct progression of our past material. Hopefully we continue to change and evolve and progress. We don’t ever want to try and write songs that sound a certain way, and definitely don’t want to mimic sounds from our past. I think this is what separates us from a lot of other bands. Too often they try and create an image, and write music to fit that image. We just are who we are, as 5 constantly changing individuals, and whatever music comes out of us is what we write.

+ The record have features of prog-rock and even of classic music. These are genres given to conceptualism, Is there a concept behind Blessed are the Bonds?
All of us had a concept attached to it. Some of our concepts even overlapped. I think we all managed to fit our story line into the titles of the songs. These follow a very specific progression for me. tragedy, tomb song -> struggle and death progress, machine -> flashback of the story of modern man, and the love of their creation (technology) leading to their demise wasteland -> the uncertainty, and emptiness of of death (or: us experiencing death) water song -> water, flowing back, washing away death, and bringing new life tree -> the full story of life, from water and dirt to a large magnificent tree. The beginning of birth, to it’s near end again. Here we have elements of the machine coming back into battle with life, but ultimately, it is realized that life has won. In a few words I would say it is about the struggle of life and death. About how death in some aspects is necessary to make room for new life to grow. We all have to see parts of ourselves die off, in order to become something new. This is the essence of evolution, the essence of progression. We can’t try to hold on to everything, or else we’ll just remain static.

+ In this sense, every song starts with the «the» article. This suggests the impression that each song talks about a very concrete topic and I don’t think it is like that. Why is this?
Each is a very concrete topic in it’s relation to the story as a whole. So in that sense they are all part of the same thing, the same story. That is why the music flows into itself, but each song is still specific and unique. It was the Story of the tree, the Story of the machine, the Story of progress, etc…

+ The record a remarkable instrumental richness, starting with the piano which have a lot of protagonism. Which instruments make appearance apart from the typical ones of a rock band?
We had a wonderful 3 piece string section, as well as a myriad of random instruments around. Trombone, accordion, sheet metal, synth. We really had the opportunity to explore what we wanted to. We work with an excellent engineer (D.James Goodwin) in a great environment. Recording the album was by far one of the better experiences in my life.

+ «Blessed…» has been some times described as «artsy», although it has strong sounds as background. Don’t you fear to get over-ambitious in your music?
Some of of fear it all the time. Some of us don’t think about it much. It’s hard to create art at all without getting called «artsy» by some. We do aim to create art rather than a product. We try to limit ourselves from being too artsy though. In the end we only ever hope to just be ourselves. Over-ambition vs pragmatism is a balance we must all deal with.

+ Thanks, we wish you the best luck and let’s hope you come to Europe soon.
Thank you for the interesting questions, and hopefully we’ll make it over to Europe (and Spain) sometime soon.
